Palatinate Kerwe in the Bad Dürkheim district of Seebach on the village square in the shadow of the historic monastery church
With around 800 inhabitants, Seebach is one of the smaller districts of Bad Dürkheim and is located on the edge of the Palatinate Forest in the west of the city. The name derives from the Seebach, a small stream that flows through the village. The centerpiece of Seebach is the monastery church – a historic church with centuries-old structures, dating back to a former monastery. The church is one of the most impressive architectural monuments in the district and forms the incomparable backdrop for the annual Kerwe.
The location of the festival grounds is the great specialty of the Seebacher Kerwe. The village square, nestled between the historic houses of Seebach and in the shadow of the majestic monastery church, offers an atmosphere that no modern festival site can achieve. When the festive lights are lit in the evening, the monastery church is atmospherically illuminated in the background, and the Palatinate wines sparkle in the glasses, a magic is created that distinguishes the Seebacher Kerwe from many other Palatinate Kerwen.
The Seebacher Kerwe traditionally takes place on the fourth weekend of July – a date that is deliberately chosen. The summer holidays have begun, Bad Dürkheim is bustling with tourists, and the warm summer evenings are ideal for a festive weekend outdoors. The four days of festivities from Friday to Monday follow the classic Palatinate Kerwe schedule: Barrel tapping on Friday, a lively concert evening on Saturday, Kerwe Sunday with a parade and lunch, and Kerwe Monday with a relaxed conclusion.
At the wine stands, local vintners from Seebach and Bad Dürkheim serve their own wines: dry Rieslings, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Rosé, and Dornfelder. The culinary offerings are provided by local clubs and the volunteer fire department with Palatinate classics: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with meat and spices), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwürste (sausages), Sauerkraut (sauerkraut), Spundekäs (cheese dip), Handkäs (hand cheese), Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), and sweet specialties.
