Summer concert series in the oldest timber-framed church on the southern Baltic coast
The Landow Church in the municipality of Dreschvitz (Vorpommern-Rügen district) is considered the oldest timber-framed church in the southern Baltic Sea region — dated around 1313. It is not only a significant architectural monument but also a venue with exceptional acoustics and atmosphere. The intimate space, the exposed timber beams, and the natural light through the small windows make every concert an atmospheric experience.
The Landower Musiksommer was launched in the late 1990s and has since been one of Rügen's most consistent concert series. The 27th edition in 2026 extends from Easter (April 5) to Erntedank (October 16) and includes around 15 dates. The church is also the oldest annually used venue of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern — a detail that underscores the musical significance of the small wooden church.
The 2026 program combines classical chamber music (Matthias Kirschnereit 'Romantik Pur', vocal group VIP, Kammermusik am Meer), spiritual occasions (Easter, Pentecost, and Erntedank services, Christian-Jewish service), a concert by the Mecklenburgische Bläserakademie, the Landow Music Festival of the Festspiele MV, and the prize-winners' concert of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater (hmt) Rostock. Additionally, there are the Landow Film Days in September. The Freundeskreis Kirche zu Landow e.V. is responsible for the organization and maintenance of the church.
The 2026 season opens with the Easter service on April 5 and concludes with Erntedank on October 16. In between, there are around 15 dates covering the full spectrum of sacred and secular music — from romantic piano music (Matthias Kirschnereit) to vocal ensembles (Vokalgruppe VIP, Vocalisti-Tradition) and festival concerts with students and teachers from the hmt Rostock.
The detailed program flyer will be published at the end of March 2026 — the exact works, start times, and prices will then be finalized. The concert dates serve as a preview, and minor changes are possible until the flyer's publication. The Landow Film Days on September 19 and 22 complement the musical program with a cinematic component.
