Large amateur sports festival with up to 15,000 athletes in Konstanz and Kreuzlingen — cross-border for the first time
The State Gymnastics Festival Baden-Württemberg is one of Germany's largest amateur sports festivals and takes place every four years. In 2026, Konstanz will be the host city — and the festival will be organized cross-border for the first time in its history: in close cooperation with the Swiss partner city Kreuzlingen, whose Dreispitz sports center will also be used. Up to 15,000 athletes from 675 gymnastics and sports clubs are expected, along with tens of thousands of spectators from Baden-Württemberg, Switzerland, and all of southern Germany.
The competition program of the State Gymnastics Festival covers the entire spectrum of German gymnastics. In artistic gymnastics, individual gymnasts and mixed pairs will compete; in athletics, individual and combined event championships will be held. In addition, there will be rhythmic gymnastics and dance, trampoline gymnastics and Rhönrad gymnastics, team sports such as fistball, Indiaca, ring tennis, and basketball, orienteering, combined event swimming, and special competitions like the Rothaus-Cup Fistball.
The competitions and festivities will be spread across several locations:
• Schänzle / Schänzle-Halle — Main venue (artistic gymnastics, dance)
• Klein Venedig — Open-air competitions and festivities on Lake Constance
• Stadtgarten — demonstration gymnastics and festival areas
• Münsterplatz — Galas, opening and closing shows
• Dreispitz Sports Center Kreuzlingen (CH) — Competitions on the Swiss side
The exchange between the two cities makes the festival a cross-border event with an open-air character — the shores of Lake Constance serve as the connecting element.
The State Gymnastics Festival is certified as Green Event BW — a sustainability standard for events in Baden-Württemberg. Waste prevention, reusable cups, public transport travel with an event ticket, regional catering, and energy-efficient logistics are part of the concept.
Konstanz (district capital of the Konstanz district, AGS 08335, approx. 84,000 inhabitants) is located on the western shore of Lake Constance, directly on the Swiss border. The independent city is home to one of Germany's youngest universities and is one of the most attractive locations on Lake Constance. The partner city Kreuzlingen (Thurgau, Switzerland, approx. 22,000 inhabitants) forms a practical twin city with Konstanz — the German-Swiss border runs through the middle of the urban area. The joint State Gymnastics Festival symbolizes this close integration.
From May 13 to 17, 2026, Konstanz will become the center of amateur sports in Baden-Württemberg. The State Gymnastics Festival, held every four years jointly by the Badischer and Schwäbischer Turner-Bund, will bring up to 15,000 athletes from 675 gymnastics and sports clubs to the Lake Constance city. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected.
In 2026, the festival will be organized cross-border for the first time in its history — in close cooperation with the Swiss partner city Kreuzlingen, whose Dreispitz Sports Center is also involved as an additional competition venue. Konstanz and Kreuzlingen, already a German-Swiss twin city in everyday life, will demonstrate their close ties with this festival. The State Gymnastics Festival is certified as Green Event BW.
