Atmospheric Summer Festival in the Spa Park
Bad Camberg is located in the Westerwald foothills on the A3 motorway between Frankfurt and Limburg – a classic Taunus spa centre with a long tradition as a recreational resort. The Kurpark Bad Camberg, with its English landscape style, music pavilion, and old trees, is the main stage for the town's cultural events. The annual Lampionfest is one of the most atmospheric summer festivals in the region.
Characteristic of the festival is the festive illumination: hundreds of illuminated lanterns hang in the trees, along the paths, and by the water features of the spa park. On Saturday evening, the entire park is illuminated by lantern light – a sight that attracts guests from surrounding communities as well. Some of the lanterns are crafted by families themselves; the tradition harks back to the historical model of German spa park summer festivals, where evenings illuminated by oil lamps structured the social life of the spa season.
Accompanying the illumination, live music is performed on both days on the stage at the music pavilion: local bands, dance groups, and choirs. Several clubs and catering businesses serve visitors with bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, wines from the Rheingau, and local beers.
The organiser is the association “Wir für Bad Camberg e.V.” (short: wfbc), a citizens' association dedicated to the cultural and social vibrancy of the town. Proceeds from the festival go towards local projects, such as the maintenance of the spa park or social initiatives.
Lantern and light festivals in spa parks date back to the 19th century and were a central part of the seasonal history of German health resorts. In Bad Camberg, the Lampionfest revives this tradition, transforming the spa park into an atmospheric hub for the town's community once a summer.
The festival culminates on Saturday evening with the grand illumination of the spa park; Sunday is more of a family day with music and catering. Organiser: Wir für Bad Camberg e.V.
