Art Under Gothic Vaults
The St. Nicholas' Church Art Market is a fixture on the cultural calendar in the Hanseatic city of Rostock. For three days, the medieval St. Nicholas' Church, one of the oldest hall churches in the Baltic Sea region, becomes an unusual gallery. More than 20 painters, graphic artists, and sculptors from Northern Germany exhibit their works in the church space, creating a unique connection between contemporary art and historical architecture.
Artists You Can Meet
Unlike in a classic gallery, the artists are personally present at the St. Nicholas' Church Art Market. Visitors can talk directly with the painters, graphic artists, and sculptors, gain insights into their working methods and inspirations, and purchase works directly from the creators. This proximity is what makes the market so special.
Opening During Art Night
The opening on Friday evening is deliberately timed to coincide with the start of the Rostock Art Night in the Eastern Old Town. While the Art Night features numerous galleries, studios, and cultural venues in the district, the Art Market in St. Nicholas' Church serves as one of its highlights. The market is then open during the day on the weekend.
St. Nicholas' Church as a Venue
St. Nicholas' Church, whose construction began around 1230, is located in the Eastern Old Town of Rostock and today sees itself as the city's cultural center. Its spacious Gothic architecture provides a backdrop for the artworks that is unparalleled in the Northern German gallery scene.
Rostock as an Art Location
The St. Nicholas' Church Art Market underscores Rostock's status – the largest city in the Rostock district and in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – as an art and cultural hub. With free admission, it invites a broad audience to discover the diversity of the Northern German art scene.
