Musical Matinée in the Medieval Cloister
The Paulikloster in Brandenburg an der Havel is one of the most important medieval brick monastery complexes in Brandenburg. Founded in the 13th century by the Dominicans, it has housed the Brandenburg Archaeological State Museum since 2008. The still-preserved monastery buildings — cloister, refectory, monastery church — are examples of North German Brick Gothic and create a unique atmosphere. The monastery garden is a hidden retreat in the middle of Brandenburg's old town.
Under the title "Culture in the Monastery," the Archaeological State Museum hosts concerts, readings, lectures, and summer picnics throughout the year. The series aims to liven up the monastery grounds and connect history with contemporary culture. The summer culture picnic is one of the most popular events — an accessible way to immerse yourself in a historical space with music and a picnic.
The concept of the picnic: a musical matinee with musicians from the Freie Musikschule Brandon in several blocks throughout the day, complemented by a themed guided tour on historical music and old kitchen culture. The guided tour connects the culinary experience with knowledge — how was food prepared, seasoned, and music played in the Middle Ages? This makes the picnic a simultaneous culinary, musical, and historical experience.
Picnic spots must be reserved in advance. You can bring your own picnic (drinks are sold on-site) or book a picnic basket from Café Pauline — the museum's own gastronomy offers thematically appropriate catering. The ambiance is intimate, idyllic, and summery — in good weather, you sit outside in the monastery garden; in case of rain, under a covered area. Those using the picnic as a day trip can combine it with a visit to the Archaeological State Museum, a city tour through Brandenburg's Neustadt, or a boat trip on the Havel between the Cathedral and Neustadt islands.
On Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 11 am to 3 pm, the support association of the Brandenburg Archaeological State Museum invites you to a Culture Picnic in the Monastery Garden of the Paulikloster.
