Saarland Open-Air Festival at the Castle Square with Live Music and Summer Fair
The Saarwellingen Schlossfest is one of the largest and most popular open-air events in Saarland. Organized by the municipality of Saarwellingen, the festival has taken place annually on the first weekend of August since 1986 – from Friday to Monday. The 40th anniversary edition took place in 2025; the 41st edition is expected in 2026.
The musical heart of the festival are two stages at the Schloßplatz and the Marktplatz, where regional and national bands perform. The genre spectrum ranges from Saarland dialect rock to pop covers, indie, and hits and party acts. A highlight of previous years was the performance by Saarland musician Maxim Maurice.
During the Schlossfest, showmen set up their Summer Fair on the festival grounds. Amusement rides for all ages, bumper cars, carousels, children's rides, and food stalls complement the concerts, making the festival a four-day Volksfest (popular festival). The fair runs from Friday to Monday.
Sunday is dedicated to Family Day: face painting, bouncy castles, craft activities, magicians, and walking acts attract families from all over the Saarlouis district. Showmen also offer reduced prices on Sundays.
Saarwellingen clubs run the food stalls: Schwenkbraten (grilled pork neck), Lyoner (sausage), Bratwurst (sausage), fries, salads, crêpes, and of course, Saarland and Bavarian beer characterize the culinary offerings. The local heritage and tourism association, the sports club, the carnival society, and other clubs share the catering – proceeds go to youth work.
Saarwellingen is a municipality with around 13,500 inhabitants in the Saarlouis district. The castle of the same name at the Schloßplatz was once the seat of the Counts of Saarwellingen and is now the administrative seat of the municipality. Visitors to the festival can combine their Saarland summer day with a hike in the Köllertal valley or a visit to the baroque fortress town of Saarlouis (10 km away).
The organizer is the municipality of Saarwellingen – Cultural Office (Cornelia Rohe and Roman Jacob). Applications for stalls and bands are possible until the end of February 2026. The detailed band program is expected to be published in early summer 2026.
The exact date and program for 2026 will likely be published by the municipality of Saarwellingen in spring 2026. The proven structure is as follows:
Free admission. Amusement rides €3–€6 per ride, reduced on Sunday (Family Day). Food and drinks at club stalls.
By car: A8 exit Saarwellingen. By train: Saarlouis station, then take bus 471 to Saarwellingen.
