About Schlossfest Saarwellingen

Since the 1980s, the Saarwellinger Schlossfest has been one of the most well-known Volksfeste (popular festivals) in the Saarlouis district. On the first weekend of August, the Schlossplatz (palace square) transforms for three to four days into a large open-air stage with regional bands, a summer funfair, children's program, and rich culinary offerings. The 40th edition was celebrated in 2025 – the 41st edition follows in 2026.

Three Days of Palace, Stage, and Summer Vibes

In the Saarlouis district, the first weekend of August has a fixed date: the Saarwellinger Schlossfest. On the central Schlossplatz in the heart of the municipality of Saarwellingen, tens of thousands of guests from all over Saarland and the Saar-Lor-Lux border region gather from Friday evening to Sunday, and often even Monday evening. With the traditional tapping of the first keg at 6:00 PM on Friday, the festival is officially opened – a ritual that is as typically Saarlandic in its own way as Lyonaisse sausage on the Sunday table.

Two Stages, Regional Bands

The heart of the festival are two open-air stages around the Schlossplatz. On Friday and Saturday evenings, regional cover bands from Saarland and the adjacent Palatinate perform here – the spectrum ranges from rock classics (Toto, Journey, Bryan Adams) to Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW), pop charts, and party Schlager.

The Sunday is dedicated to the family: morning pint, handmade rock & pop in the afternoon, and a children's program characterize the day.

Summer Funfair and Children's Island

Around the Schlossplatz, the summer funfair is set up with rides, a giant slide, dodgems, and carousels. The so-called "Kinderinsel" (Children's Island) offers its own, free program for the youngest guests with a face-painting corner, craft activities, and interactive shows. Magicians perform, as do clowns and children's musicians. For many Saarwellingen families, the Schlossfest is the secret highlight of the summer holidays.

Saarlandic Culinary Delights

At the stalls, you'll find the full spectrum of Saarlandic Volksfest classics: "Schwenker" (grilled meat skewers) with fries, "Dibbelabbes" (potato dish) with apple sauce, Lyoner burgers, wood-fired Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), potato pancakes with apple sauce. Accompanied by local beer (often Karlsberg from Homburg or Bruch from Saarbrücken), wine from the Mosel and neighboring Lorraine, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and coffee specialties.

History and Significance

The Schlossfest was launched in the mid-1980s to revitalize the historic Schlossplatz – the site of the former moated castle of the Lords of Wallerfangen – as the cultural center of the municipality. What began as a modest community festival has continuously developed into one of the most visited Volksfeste in the Saarlouis district. A significant anniversary was celebrated in 2025 with the 40th edition; the festival is now an integral part of the Saarlandic Volksfest season between the major "Heimattage" and the "Saarspektakel.".

The Municipality of Saarwellingen

Saarwellingen is centrally located in the Saarlouis district, about 10 kilometers northeast of the district town and a good 25 kilometers northwest of Saarbrücken. With around 13,000 inhabitants, the municipality is manageable, but its Schlossfest resonates far beyond the municipal borders – not least thanks to the commitment of numerous clubs involved in the organization.

Schlossfest Saarwellingen — edition 2026

The 41st edition of the Saarwellinger Schlossfest is scheduled for the first weekend of August 2026. Three days of live music on two stages, a summer funfair across the entire Schlossplatz, a Children's Island with a free program, and the traditional keg tapping on Friday evening will mark the festival, even in the afterglow of the anniversary.

In 2026, the festival follows the proven concept: Opening by the mayor with keg tapping on Friday at 6:00 PM, evening cover band concerts on two stages on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday, a "Frühschoppen" with musical accompaniment and a family program. Applications for bands, club stalls, and commercial exhibitors are handled by the cultural office of the municipality of Saarwellingen until the end of February 2026.
