Two weeks of open-air on the Wöhrmühle island in Erlangen
The Wöhrmühle island is a small river island in the middle of the Regnitz, on the northern edge of Erlangen's city center. Every summer, Erlangen's E-Werk cultural center hosts its most important open-air festival here: the Kulturinsel Wöhrmühle. For two weeks, eleven to twelve concert evenings are on the program — a mix of international headliners, the German indie scene, Bavarian folk avant-garde, and a classical double-header to kick things off.
The island is about a ten-minute walk from Erlangen's main train station. The festival grounds are framed by waterways, old trees, and the historic Wöhrmühle. The stage is open under the sky, and the grounds offer space for several thousand visitors per evening — manageable enough to be close to the artists, large enough for a real festival atmosphere.
Since the 1980s, the E-Werk Erlangen has been one of the most important cultural centers in Middle Franconia. A former power plant was transformed into a socio-cultural center with a concert hall, pub, cinema, and its own festival. The Kulturinsel Wöhrmühle is its summer flagship — an event with decades of experience, professional stage technology, and close ties to the German and international indie scene.
Erlangen is the youngest major city in Middle Franconia (just under 115,000 inhabitants), known for the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, Siemens Healthineers, and a vibrant cultural scene. In summer, the Kulturinsel joins the ranks alongside the Bergkirchweih (May/June), the International Puppet Theatre Festival, the Poetenfest (August), and the Comic-Salon (biennial). If you don't want to spend the whole day in the city on a concert evening: Nuremberg is 20 minutes away by S-Bahn.
Kulturinsel Wöhrmühle 2026 features eleven concerts plus a free sing-along evening, making it one of Erlangen's most packed festival weeks. The line-up was completed in May 2026 and mixes international acts (The Wombats from Liverpool, French singer ZAZ), German-language indie (Von Wegen Lisbeth, Berq, RIAN), Bavarian classics (LaBrassBanda, Haindling on farewell tour), classical and jazz to open, as well as an Eisbrecher concert for industrial rock fans.
Special for 2026: the participatory 'Kneipensingen für Alle' (Pub Sing-along for Everyone) on July 22 will take place open-air on the Kulturinsel for the first time — free entry, singing along allowed and encouraged.
