Large city festival with music, culture, and hands-on activities
Oldenburg in Holstein, with around 10,000 inhabitants on the Baltic Sea coast between Kiel and Fehmarn, is the district capital of Ostholstein in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With its medieval history as the Slavic Starigard and its vibrant city center today, the town is the ideal location for a city festival that combines music, tradition, and community. The Kulturelles Sommerfest is organized by the non-profit KulTour Oldenburg in Holstein gGmbH — a municipal cultural company that bundles city museum, events, and tourist services.
The summer festival follows a classic two-day concept: On Friday evening, a warm-up takes place on Pumpenplatz, organized by the traditional St. Johannis Toten- und Schützengilde von 1192 and the Marinekameradschaft Oldenburg, accompanied musically by the Heiligenhafen Gildekapelle. Saturday features the main festival in the city center: a stage on the central square, stalls from clubs, artisans, and artists, and hands-on activities for children and families.
The mix of traditional guild music and contemporary stage acts reflects Oldenburg's identity as a historic city with a vibrant present. The St. Johannis Gilde of 1192 — one of the oldest surviving guilds in Northern Germany — gives the festival its traditional roots, while artists from Oldenburg and the region contribute the contemporary side. Clubs present their work, and local vendors provide food and drinks.
The Kulturelles Sommerfest attracts visitors from all over the Ostholstein district and beyond. It is part of the comprehensive cultural program that KulTour Oldenburg offers year-round — from city tours and museum exhibitions to concerts. Free admission and a family-friendly concept make it one of the most important summer events in the region.
The 2026 summer festival continues the proven concept. The organizers are KulTour Oldenburg in Holstein gGmbH and numerous clubs. The program combines tradition (guild music from the St. Johannis Toten- und Schützengilde v. 1192) with contemporary stage acts and hands-on activities for families.
