Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet in Stuttgart's Bad Cannstatt district
According to its own records, the Kübelesmarkt Bad Cannstatt is one of Württemberg's oldest Carnival traditions — founded in 1828 when the Kübler guild (makers of wooden vessels) first appeared as an organized group. Today, the Kübelesmarkt e.V. carries on the tradition throughout the year and into the Swabian-Alemannic Carnival landscape, which spans Swabia, Baden, Further Austria, and Switzerland. The Cannstatt Carnival is among the most traditional urban carnivals in Southern Germany.
The actual start of the Carnival week is Schmotziger Donnerstag (Greasy Thursday) on February 12, 2026. Program: 10:00 AM Festive Weekly Market on the market square with morning pint and sketch program by the Kübler. 6:00 PM Town Hall Storming — the Kübelesmarkt jester police symbolically take over the Cannstatt Town Hall. The highlight follows at 7:00 PM: the traditional Kübelesrennen with around 30 teams, regularly including the professional team of VfB Stuttgart. Four people carry a tub of water through an obstacle course — whoever spills the least and is the fastest wins.
Carnival Tuesday, February 17, 2026, belongs to the little ones: At 2:30 PM, the children's parade starts with over 600 costumed children from kindergartens, schools, and Cannstatt clubs — one of Württemberg's largest children's Carnival events. On Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 7:00 PM, the Geldbeutelwäsche takes place at the historic Erbsenbrunnen — a symbolic ritual for Ash Wednesday, where empty money purses are cleaned after Carnival, accompanied by mourning songs from the Kübler and stout beer service.
With over 70,000 inhabitants, Bad Cannstatt is Stuttgart's most populous district and was its own town until its incorporation in 1905 — a history that shapes the district's independent self-image. The market square with the town hall and the historic Erbsenbrunnen are the center of the Cannstatt Carnival; the Marktstraße and the Cannstatter Wasen (only for the weekly market in spring) also play a role.
The 2026 Fasnet week in Bad Cannstatt begins on Schmotziger Donnerstag, February 12, 2026, and ends on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026. The organizer is Kübelesmarkt e.V., which has upheld the Cannstatt Fasnet since 1828. The venue is the historic market square of Bad Cannstatt, complemented by the Erbsenbrunnen and the Cannstatt Town Hall.
