Traditional Christmas Market in the historic Old Town of Bad Cannstatt
While the Stuttgart Main Christmas Market on Schlossplatz attracts thousands of visitors, the Cannstatter Weihnachtsmarkt in the historic old town district of Bad Cannstatt is its charming neighbor. From November 25 to December 23, 2026, it opens its stalls daily along Marktstraße between Erbsenbrunnen and Stadtkirche, complemented by Rathausplatz. The historic half-timbered houses and narrow alleys of the old town provide the perfect backdrop for an intimate and festive Christmas atmosphere.
At the heart of the market is the heated Alpine hut in front of the district town hall — one of the coziest places to relax on cold Advent evenings. Here, you can enjoy mulled wine, Alpine specialties, and musical entertainment. The family program includes a children's carousel, storytelling sessions, craft afternoons, and performances by regional choirs. The Star Market character — stars, fairy lights, and the namesake "sea of stars" — shapes the atmosphere.
The special highlight in the festival calendar is the Nikolausmarkt on December 6, 2026. On this day, St. Nicholas visits Marktstraße, distributes gifts to children, and holds a reading in the Stadtkirche. The day is traditionally the busiest of the entire Christmas market and is accompanied by a special program.
Until 2022, the market was called "Sternenmarkt" or "Welt-Weihnachtsmarkt". Since 2023, the official name is "Cannstatter Weihnachtsmarkt" — the identity as a district market and the traditional program have been deliberately preserved. The approximately 80 stalls offer regional handicrafts, mulled wine, roasted almonds, Christmas decorations, candles, and culinary specialties — primarily from regional providers.
With nearly 80,000 inhabitants, Bad Cannstatt is Stuttgart's largest and oldest district. The historic old town around the Stadtkirche is one of the most beautiful in Württemberg — with half-timbered houses, fountains, narrow alleys, and the Erbsenbrunnen as a central meeting point. In summer, the Wasen is the Volksfest grounds — in winter, the old town becomes the stage for the Star Market.
From November 25 to December 23, 2026, the old town of Cannstatt transforms into a four-week Star Market. Around 80 stalls, a heated Alpine hut, Advent concerts in the Stadtkirche, and a special highlight on St. Nicholas' Day (December 6).
Free admission. Food, drinks, and goods at usual Christmas market prices — mulled wine from approx. €4, small snacks from approx. €3.
Bad Cannstatt is optimally accessible by S-Bahn (all Stuttgart lines S1–S6 stop at Bad Cannstatt station) and Stadtbahn (U1, U2, U13, U14, U16, U19). From Stuttgart Main Station, it's a 6-minute S-Bahn ride. From Bad Cannstatt station, it's a 5-minute walk to Marktstraße. Parking in the city center is very limited — travel by public transport is recommended.
