About Krass Festival
Krass Festival — edition 2026
2026 Edition — "The Word as Resistance"
The 2026 edition addresses the political and social dimensions of language. Words are not neutral — they can cement or break hierarchies, enable or prevent understanding. The festival invites international writers, performers, musicians, and social scientists to artistically explore this duality.

International Voices, Local Staging
The Krass Kultur Crash Festival has been running since 2012 and has established itself as one of Northern Germany's most prominent transcultural performance festivals. It is organized by Kunstwerk e.V. in cooperation with the Kampnagel cultural center in the Hamburg-Nord district. The Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media provides institutional support for the festival.
Three Venues, Three Weeks
The 2026 edition spans 13 days and three iconic Hamburg venues:
- March 3–8: Kampnagel (Jarrestraße 20, Winterhude/Barmbek-Süd) — former factory halls, one of Germany's most renowned independent venues
- March 9–10: Alabama Kino (Klosterallee 65, Eimsbüttel) — arthouse cinema with a long tradition
- March 13–15: Centralkomitee (St. Pauli district) — alternative venue with a political profile
2026 Motto: "The Word as Resistance"
The festival views language as a stage for political and social conflicts. Words can hurt, exclude, manipulate — but they can also create understanding, enable dialogue, and resist trivialization. The 2026 edition explores this dual nature in performances, concerts, discourse formats, and film series.
Artistic Disciplines
The program includes:
- Literature and poetry performances
- Dance and performance theater
- Music from various cultural circles
- Film series and documentaries (Alabama Kino)
- Sociological and political discourse formats
- Discussions and panels
International Cast
The 2026 program brings together writers, musicians, performers, and social scientists from diverse cultural backgrounds — deliberately cross-border, transcultural. The organizers describe their goal as "artistic positions for the unification, intervention, and disruption of the present" — a program that clearly distinguishes the festival from escapist cultural formats.
