Summer festival in the historic half-timbered old town below the castle hill
Königsberg in Bavaria is located in the district of Haßberge in Lower Franconia, nestled between the Mainfranken region and the Franconian Steigerwald forest. With just under 4,000 inhabitants, the town is small but exceptionally rich in culture: it is considered one of the best-preserved half-timbered townscapes in Franconia and is the birthplace of the astronomer and mathematician Johannes Müller (1436–1476), known by the scholarly name Regiomontanus. His birthplace, with its ornate wooden bracing, still stands today and houses a small museum.
The Bürgerfest takes place in the old town around the Marktplatz (market square) and Salzmarkt (salt market). Colourful half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, old cobblestone streets, and the late Gothic St. Mary's Church from the 15th century form a stage that cannot be built. High above the town, the ruins of the Stauferburg castle sit enthroned on the Schlossberg – its landmark, visible from the entire old town.
The 2026 Bürgerfest begins on Sunday, August 9, at 2 p.m. The town closes the old town streets to traffic; local clubs, restaurateurs, and the trade association set up stalls. Live music at various locations, children's activities, club cafés, and Franconian cuisine characterize the afternoon and evening. The format is deliberately manageable: a festival from Königsberg for Königsberg, with open doors for guests from the surrounding villages, from Schweinfurt, Coburg, and Bamberg.
The Bürgerfest is not the only major event in the annual calendar: the Königsberger Pfingstfest (Pentecost Festival) in May and the Königsberger Rosentage (Rose Days) in June are also among the regionally known festivals. Those who visit one should also consider the others – the medieval townscape demands several seasons.
Königsberg is located on the edge of the Franconian wine-growing region. The town is the starting point of the Abt-Degen-Weintour, a wine hiking route through the Hassberge. At the Bürgerfest, Franconian specialties are served: Schäufele (pork shoulder), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Kraut (cabbage), Klöße (dumplings) – accompanied by wine from Würzburger Stein to the Hassberge region.
The 2026 Königsberger Bürgerfest takes place on Sunday afternoon and evening throughout the old town. The town administration closes the cobblestone streets to traffic, while clubs, restaurateurs, and traders set up stalls, and musicians play in various squares.
Framed by colourful half-timbered houses, the Regiomontanus House, and the late Gothic St. Mary's Church, an atmosphere is created that has become rare in this form. Königsberg welcomes its guests as a historic market town should: approachable, hospitable, and proud of its cityscape.
The full program will be published before the festival on the town's website and in the local newsletters.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the club stalls at usual market prices (beer €4–5, wine €4–5 per Schoppen, Bratwurst €4–6, Schäufele €12–14). Family-friendly prices.
