Quarterly neighborhood culture festival along Bochumer Straße in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf — theatre, techno, performance in pubs, vacant spaces, and snack bars
Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf is one of the most exciting districts in the Ruhr area: formerly shaped by industry and mining, today it's an urban renewal area with vacant properties, creative hubs, artist collectives, and a strong sense of neighborhood. Bochumer Straße, the main thoroughfare between the city center and Bochum, forms the backbone of the district — and since 2022, the stage for the most extraordinary festival in the Ruhr area: KOMMSE ÜCKEN?!
The concept is radical: the neighborhood actors of Ückendorf — restaurateurs, gallery owners, association chairpersons, theatre makers, DJs, activists — join forces as Kollektiv Ücken and use their own spaces for one evening. Theatre performances take place in pubs, DJ sets in front of snack bars, techno raves in vacant spaces, performances in backyards, readings in galleries. You walk along Bochumer Straße, hear something different from every door, go in, watch, move on. Hop-on-hop-off festival culture without admission wristbands.
KOMMSE ÜCKEN?! is timed quarterly, with one date per quarter:
This frequency is unusual — most festivals take place annually — and a conscious decision: the neighborhood should be activated regularly, not just once in the summer as a tourist attraction. KOMMSE ÜCKEN?! is a permanent cultural format that develops the district.
The festival is financed through the Bochumer Straße urban renewal program of the City of Gelsenkirchen — a funding program that supports the district's transformation. The money goes towards technical equipment, artist fees, security services, and advertising. The venues provide their spaces free of charge, the artists work for fair but moderate fees — and the audience gets in for free.
Since 2022, KOMMSE ÜCKEN?! has evolved from an insider tip to a must-attend event on the Ruhr area's cultural scene. The venues are often full, some performances sell out, the atmosphere is intimate and exuberant at the same time. Anyone interested in underground culture, urban development, techno, and theatre beyond subsidized theatres should mark the date in their calendar — four times a year.
In 2026, KOMMSE ÜCKEN?! will activate the Ückendorf district on four Saturdays — one in the middle of each quarter: March 14, June 13, September 12, and December 12, 2026. On each date, the locations along Bochumer Straße — pubs, snack bars, vacant spaces, backyards, galleries — will transform into stages for an interdisciplinary cultural program of theatre, performance, readings, DJ sets, techno, and visual arts. Free admission, hop-on-hop-off between locations, Kollektiv Ücken curates the respective program.
Detailed program per date will be published four weeks before the event on insaneurbancowboys.de/kommse-uecken.
Free admission to all locations and program points. Drinks and food in pubs, bars, and snack bars at usual local prices.
