About Klever Kirmes

From July 11 to 19, 2026, the Klever Kirmes will take place — nine days of Volksfest (popular festival) with carousels, dodgems, showmen, and culinary stalls along the Spoy Canal. The town of Kleve on the Lower Rhine transforms its central fairgrounds, Hafenstraße and Ludwig-Jahn-Straße, into a sprawling amusement park with a grand marksmen's parade, barrel tapping ceremony, and free admission — the most important summer Kirmes in the Kleve district.

Nine Days of Kirmes on the Spoy Canal

The Klever Kirmes is one of the major Volksfeste (popular festivals) of the lower Lower Rhine region. The next edition will take place from July 11 to 19, 2026 — nine days of amusement park in Kleve's city center, with its characteristic canal serving as a scenic backdrop.

The Fairgrounds: Hafenstraße and Ludwig-Jahn-Straße

The Kirmes occupies two central fairgrounds:

  • Hafenstraße Parking Lot — the main area with the large rides
  • Ludwig-Jahn-Straße — an additional area with bistros, children's rides, and snack stands

Both areas are connected by a festival mile along the Spoy Canal — a unique backdrop in the Lower Rhine region, with water, trees, and the city skyline in view.

What the Kirmes Offers

The Klever Kirmes follows the classic Rhenish Volksfest tradition:

  • Rides: Dodgems, carousels, Ferris wheel, roller coasters, log flumes
  • Children's Rides: Carousels, children's roller coaster, chain carousel for the little ones
  • Culinary Delights: Churros, candied almonds, potato pancakes, bratwurst, baked potatoes
  • Sweets: Cotton candy, gingerbread hearts, almond roasters
  • Shooting galleries, lottery stalls, classics of the showman tradition

Grand Marksmen's Parade — The Highlight

Traditionally, the Kirmes is officially opened with the barrel tapping ceremony by the mayor on the first festival weekend. The second weekend features the Grand Marksmen's Parade as the traditional highlight: Kleve's marksmen's clubs parade through the city center on Saturday — a combination of Volksfest and marksmen's tradition that has been celebrated in Kleve for decades.

Kleve — The Gateway to the Lower Rhine

The city of Kleve, with its approximately 50,000 inhabitants, is located in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, near the Dutch border. With the Spoy Canal, the Schwanenburg castle on the Stiftshügel hill, and an extensive pedestrian zone, Kleve is one of the most scenically and historically attractive cities in the Lower Rhine region. The Klever Kirmes is one of the city's flagship events.
