Jazz under Gothic Vaults
The "KlangFarben. Jazz im Dom" series unites two very different worlds: the late Gothic hall space of Greifswald Cathedral of St. Nicholas from the 14th century and the free language of jazz. During the concerts, the cathedral is bathed in coloured light and filled with music — a sensory encounter of architecture, light, and sound.
Two Concerts 2026
The 2026 season includes two concerts: On August 29th at 6 PM, the ensemble "catfish row" with Anett Levander (vocals, percussion), Christian Raake (saxophone, flute), and Dirk Steglich (bass clarinet) will perform music by George Gershwin and Duke Ellington in a reduced, sensual interpretation. On October 31st at 8 PM, Gabriel Rosenbach (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Tobias Altripp (piano) will present their own compositions, jazz standards, works by Chick Corea, and contemporary pieces.
Acoustics and Atmosphere
The hall-like cathedral with its slender columns and high vault lends the concerts an extraordinary acoustic depth. The coloured lighting — orange, blue, violet — changes the mood in the church space depending on the programme segment.
Local Context
Greifswald is part of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Cathedral of St. Nicholas, with its distinctive tower, has shaped the silhouette of the Hanseatic city since the 14th century — and today, alongside the Greifswald Bach Week and Organ Summer, it is a central venue for "KlangFarben. Jazz im Dom".
