Franconian Kirchweih of the Kirchweihverein Reichenschwand in the Nürnberger Land district
The Kirwa Reichenschwand is one of the better-known Kirchweihen in the Central Franconian district of Nürnberger Land. Reichenschwand, a municipality with around 2,000 inhabitants between Hersbruck and Lauf in the picturesque Pegnitz Valley, cultivates a lively piece of Franconian traditional culture with the Kirchweihverein Reichenschwand e.V.
The Kirchweihverein Reichenschwand e.V. was founded in January 2011 and has around 170 members. Its goal: to preserve the traditional Franconian Kirchweih in Reichenschwand and pass it on to the younger generation. Successful Kirwa events were revived in 2021 and 2023 after pandemic-related interruptions. The festival is scheduled in its continuously grown form in July 2026.
As with every Franconian Kirwa, the Kirwabuam and Kirwamadla are at the center. Prerequisites for participation: at least 16 years old, single, participation in the preparatory Kirwa meeting. The young men and women erect the Kirwabaum – a tree trunk decorated with colorful ribbons – dance the traditional Kirwa dances, and shape the image of the Kirwa with their traditional costumes and festivities. A festival tent, Franconian specialties, and music characterize the weekend.
The state of Bavaria and the administrative district of Middle Franconia are one of the most densely populated Kirchweih regions in Germany. In the Nürnberger Land district alone, there are dozens of village-specific Kirwas per year. The Kirwa Reichenschwand joins this tradition and offers an authentic insight into Franconian festival culture beyond the major city festivals.
From Thursday, July 23 to Monday, July 27, 2026, the Kirchweihverein Reichenschwand invites you to the traditional Kirwa at the Reichenschwand festival grounds. The five-day festival weekend follows the established Franconian Kirwa tradition with the opening of the festival tent, Kirwabaum erection, festival Sunday with dancing, and Kehraus (farewell party) on Monday.
The festival is supported by the Kirwabuam and Kirwamadla – young men and women aged 16 and over, single, and members of the association. They erect the Kirwabaum, dance the traditional Kirwa dances, and manage the catering in the festival tent. Specific program details will be communicated in the weeks leading up to the festival on kirwa-reichenschwand.de and on the association's social media channels.
Free admission. Catering in the festival tent by the Kirwabuam and Kirwamadla at usual association prices.
Reichenschwand is located on the B14 federal highway and on the Nuremberg–Bayreuth railway line (S1 S-Bahn) with its own stop. Approximately 25 minutes journey time from Nuremberg Central Station, then a short walk to the festival grounds.
Free admission. Catering in the festival tent by the Kirwabuam and Kirwamadla at usual association prices.
The erection of the Kirwabaum – usually on Saturday afternoon – is one of the spectacular traditional moments and should not be missed. The festival Sunday with Frühschoppen (morning pint) and dancing is the thematic highlight.
