About Christmas Market Hersbruck

For around four weeks, the Hersbruck Christmas Market transforms the Upper and Lower Market squares of the historic old town into a lovingly staged Franconian Advent market. The festival has been a firm fixture of the pre-Christmas season in the Nuremberg region since 1994. Hersbruck gingerbread, mulled wine, Franconian bratwurst, honey products, and handicrafts are lined up around the town hall; a children's carousel and a diverse stage program with choirs, singing groups, and regional artists complete the market. Unlike the large Christkindlesmärkte of the metropolises, Hersbruck remains quiet, personal, and deeply rooted in Franconian tradition.

Hersbruck Christmas Market — Pure Franconian Advent

Hersbruck — the small Franconian town on the edge of the Nuremberg region and at the same time the gateway to the Hersbruck Switzerland — is one of those places whose old townscape is perfect for Christmas markets. Half-timbered houses, arched gateways, the Gothic town hall, and the Shepherd Museum form the backdrop. Since 1994, this historic townscape has been transformed into an Advent landscape annually from the end of November until just before Christmas.

Hersbruck in the Nuremberg Region

Hersbruck is a medium-sized town with around 12,000 inhabitants in the Nuremberg Land district, Bavaria. It is reachable by S-Bahn line S 1 from Nuremberg in 30 minutes and is therefore part of the metropolitan region's commuter belt. Economically shaped by small and medium-sized enterprises, culturally by the Shepherd Museum, geographically by the nearby Hersbruck Switzerland with its mountains and caves, the town offers an independent Franconian identity — which becomes particularly visible during Advent.

What Characterizes the Market

The Hersbruck Christmas Market is not a mass phenomenon like the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg — and that is precisely its strength. The stalls are close together on the manageable squares around the town hall, visitors and vendors often know each other personally, and the atmosphere is warm and relaxed.

Assortment and Delicacies

Classically Franconian, with a focus on:

  • Hersbrucker Lebkuchen — the local version of the Franconian classic
  • Mulled wine and punch in hand-crafted mugs
  • Franconian bratwurst, potato pancakes, doughnuts
  • Honey products and beeswax candles from local beekeepers
  • Handicrafts, Advent arrangements, gift ideas
  • Sweets, candied almonds, gingerbread

Stage, Children, and Program

A lovingly designed children's carousel spins its rounds on the town hall square; regional artists, singers, choirs, school choirs, and brass choirs perform on the stage. The program changes over the four weeks — a recurring highlight is Advent Sundays and the brass choir evenings by candlelight.

Opening with Sunday Shopping

The traditional opening is the first Sunday of Advent with Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM — a proven combination of the Advent market and downtown retail.
