Four-week Advent market around the town hall — Franconian charm in a pastoral museum idyll
Hersbruck — the small Franconian town on the edge of the Nuremberg region and at the same time the gateway to the Hersbruck Switzerland — is one of those places whose old townscape is perfect for Christmas markets. Half-timbered houses, arched gateways, the Gothic town hall, and the Shepherd Museum form the backdrop. Since 1994, this historic townscape has been transformed into an Advent landscape annually from the end of November until just before Christmas.
Hersbruck is a medium-sized town with around 12,000 inhabitants in the Nuremberg Land district, Bavaria. It is reachable by S-Bahn line S 1 from Nuremberg in 30 minutes and is therefore part of the metropolitan region's commuter belt. Economically shaped by small and medium-sized enterprises, culturally by the Shepherd Museum, geographically by the nearby Hersbruck Switzerland with its mountains and caves, the town offers an independent Franconian identity — which becomes particularly visible during Advent.
The Hersbruck Christmas Market is not a mass phenomenon like the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg — and that is precisely its strength. The stalls are close together on the manageable squares around the town hall, visitors and vendors often know each other personally, and the atmosphere is warm and relaxed.
Classically Franconian, with a focus on:
A lovingly designed children's carousel spins its rounds on the town hall square; regional artists, singers, choirs, school choirs, and brass choirs perform on the stage. The program changes over the four weeks — a recurring highlight is Advent Sundays and the brass choir evenings by candlelight.
The traditional opening is the first Sunday of Advent with Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM — a proven combination of the Advent market and downtown retail.
The 31st edition of the Hersbruck Christmas Market is confirmed by the official event listing of the town of Hersbruck and the German Christmas Market magazine. The market opens on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and ends on December 23, 2026.
As in previous years, exhibitors will set up their stalls around the town hall — on the Upper Market and Lower Market squares. The stage program will be published from late autumn via hersbruck.de; traditionally, local choirs, singing groups, brass choirs, and artists from the Nuremberg region perform.
Sunday shopping in Hersbruck's city center to mark the market's opening (in previous years on the first Sunday of Advent from 1 PM–6 PM) — the final date will be communicated by the city.
Hersbruck is reachable by S-Bahn line S 1 from Nuremberg Central Station in 30 minutes (terminus Hersbruck rechts/links der Pegnitz). By car via the A 9 or B 14. Parking spaces on the outskirts with a short walk to the old town.
Thursday to Saturday 4 PM–10 PM, Sunday 2 PM–10 PM. From December 15th daily 4 PM–10 PM.
Free admission. Food and purchases on site.
