Northern Germany's largest Christopher Street Day with 250,000 participants — Motto: We Write the Future: Equal. Self-determined. Queer.
With over 250,000 participants and spectators, CSD Hannover is one of the largest Pride events in Germany — and clearly the largest CSD in Northern Germany. Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel, and Hannover are central CSDs in the northern German region, with Hannover standing out due to its size. The organizer is CSD Hannover e.V., which has been working voluntarily for decades and is financed through donations, small sponsors, and dedicated volunteers.
The motto 'Wir schreiben Zukunft: Gleichberechtigt. Selbstbestimmt. Queer.' (We Write the Future: Equal. Self-determined. Queer.) addresses three central demands of the LGBTIQA+ community. Equal — the fight against legal discrimination is not over, even though marriage for all and the self-determination law were important first steps. Self-determined — every person has the right to decide about their own gender identity and sexuality, without paternalism from the state, medicine, or society. Queer — the conscious appropriation of a term historically used as an insult as a positive self-designation stands for the acceptance of the entire diversity beyond binary categories.
Saturday begins at 12 PM with a political rally at Opernplatz. Speakers from politics, activism, culture, and science will address current issues of the community: hate crimes against queer people, rights of trans and intersex individuals, international solidarity with persecuted LGBTIQA+ people in Russia, Hungary, the USA, and other countries, diversity in professional life, queer refugees. At 2 PM, the demonstration parade will begin — a long, colorful procession of themed floats, associations, initiatives, parties (with a clear distancing from right-wing currents), sports and cultural groups, and private individuals. The route leads through the city center, past Marktkirche, Aegidientorplatz, and the train station, returning to Opernplatz. Afterwards, the street festival continues until 10 PM.
Sunday is purely a festival. From 1 PM to 10 PM, several stages around Opernplatz will feature live concerts, drag shows, performance acts, DJ sets, and comedy. Information booths from queer associations, counseling centers, health organizations, and political groups form the political backbone. Food and drink stalls provide refreshments. Families are welcome — CSD is explicitly also a Family CSD.
Despite all the festival atmosphere, the political agenda of CSD remains clear. The experience of the Stonewall riots in New York's Christopher Street in 1969, considered the birthplace of the modern LGBTIQA+ movement, continues to shape the program. Those who attribute only the party and spectacle to CSD overlook the serious political core that the event continues to carry.
CSD is a free-to-access event. Those who wish to support the work of CSD Hannover e.V. can donate at the booth or become a supporting member. Organizing such a large event on a voluntary basis relies on financial and personnel support.
The full stage program, list of speakers, and demonstration route will be published in advance by CSD Hannover e.V. on hannovercsd.de.
Hannover Hauptbahnhof (main train station), 5-minute walk to Opernplatz. Stadtbahn (light rail) lines 1/2/4/5/8 to Steintor or Aegidientorplatz stop. By car via A2/A7, public transport recommended.
