Traditional Upper Palatinate Kirwa of the FFW Schmidgaden
The Kirwa – the Kirchweih – is one of the most vibrant and popular traditions in the Upper Palatinate. Originally a festival to consecrate the local church, it is now a multi-day village festival with deep-rooted rituals. In Schmidgaden, in the district of Schwandorf (state of Bavaria), the Schmidgaden Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the "Schmigoner Kirwa".
The venue is the BRK-Haus in Schmidgaden. The Kirwa includes marksmen, who loudly open the festival, hearty brass band music, beer service, and exuberant party atmosphere. The mix of tradition during the day and celebration in the evening makes the Upper Palatinate Kirwa particularly appealing – a festival for all generations.
Like many village festivals in Bavaria, the Schmigoner Kirwa thrives on volunteer commitment: The Schmidgaden Volunteer Fire Brigade organizes the festival, bringing the village community together. Schmidgaden maintains a rich Kirwa culture – in addition to the main Kirwa organized by the fire brigade, there are other Kirchweihen in the districts throughout the year.
Gunshots, brass band music, and a lively atmosphere in the festival tent: The Schmigoner Kirwa stands for unadulterated Upper Palatinate Kirwa culture. Anyone who wants to experience a real Kirwa is in the right place here – down-to-earth, tradition-conscious, and with plenty of fun.
The Schmidgaden Volunteer Fire Brigade is organizing the Schmigoner Kirwa 2026 from August 15 to 17 at the BRK-Haus Schmidgaden. The Kirwa includes marksmen for the opening, hearty brass band music, beer service, and an exuberant party atmosphere – a true Upper Palatinate Kirchweih over three days.
Schmidgaden maintains a rich Kirwa culture: In addition to the main Kirwa, other Kirchweihen take place in the districts throughout the year, such as the village Kirwa in Trisching in September.
