Since 1485 – traditional Kirchweihmarkt (church consecration market) on the village square in Berchtesgadener Land
The Kirchweihmarkt Anger – popularly known as "Angerer Kirtag" – is one of the oldest continuously celebrated markets in Bavaria. First documented in the year 1485, the market will celebrate its 541st edition in 2026. This places the Angerer Kirtag among the oldest annual markets in Germany and demonstrates how long market rights can remain vibrant in small Upper Bavarian towns.
The venue is the central village square of Anger. On market days, the village square is closed to car traffic, and delivery traffic is also excluded. Up to 90 market traders offering clothing, footwear, household goods, tools, sweets, regional specialties, and handicrafts line the square and the adjacent streets. In addition, there are 15 amusement ride operators with carousels, shooting galleries, candy stalls, and small family attractions for children.
Local inns serve Upper Bavarian delicacies: Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Weißwurst-Frühschoppen (white sausage brunch), Brezn (pretzels), Bratwürste (sausages), Krapfen (doughnuts). Upper Bavarian brass bands and party bands play on a small stage, creating the Kirtag atmosphere. Sitting at one of the inn tables offers a chance to experience the convivial gathering of the entire village community with guests from the Berchtesgadener Land region.
Anger is a municipality with just over 4,700 inhabitants in the Berchtesgadener Land district in Upper Bavaria (state of Bavaria). The municipality is located in Rupertiwinkel, a culturally significant region at the transition between the foothills of the Alps and the Salzburger Land. Anger itself is a typical Upper Bavarian village with a baroque parish church, a traditional village center, and a strong culture of associations and customs. Its historical significance as a market town is still reflected today in the spacious village square and its traditional market rights.
For 2026, the municipality of Anger has announced a photo contest: the most beautiful snapshots from the 2026 Kirtag will be awarded prizes. This initiative shows how deeply the Angerer Kirtag is embedded in the local sense of identity – not as a relic of the past, but as a living part of the community.
On Sunday, May 3rd, the market officially opens at 12:00 PM after the Sunday service. On Monday, May 4th (Kirtag Monday), the market starts already at 10:00 AM and remains lively throughout the day. The municipality of Anger closes its town hall concurrently, as the Kirtag is considered a social highlight of village life. The "Most Beautiful Kirtag Moments 2026" photo contest is running concurrently.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the inns and market stalls at usual Kirtag prices. Amusement rides according to operator (carousel ride from approx. €2).
