Traditional Horse Pilgrimage in the Chiemgau
The Inzeller Michaeliritt is one of the most significant horse pilgrimages in the Chiemgau region and a firm fixture in the customs calendar of the municipality of Inzell in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein. On the last Sunday in September, the town center transforms into a festive stage for around 250 magnificently decorated horses, riders, teams, and carriages.
After assembling at the Badepark, the impressive procession of riders moves through the town center. The highlight is the traditional blessing of horses at the Church of Our Lady: the festively adorned animals are blessed – a custom dating back centuries to the veneration of the peasant patrons St. Leonard, St. Michael, and St. George. In Inzell, the ride was moved to coincide with Saint Michael's Day, thus linking it with Michaeli, a traditional farmers' holiday with market activities.
Following the pilgrimage, the grand Michaelifest takes place at the Badepark. A Sunday with extended shopping hours, a handicraft and customs market in the town center, and hearty catering with Chiemgau specialties make the day an autumn highlight for families, locals, and guests.
The Michaeliritt is deeply rooted in Inzell's identity and attracts thousands of spectators to the Chiemgau every year.
The Inzeller Michaeliritt 2026 will be celebrated on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The handicraft and customs market and Inzell's shops will open for extended Sunday shopping hours in the town center starting at 10 AM. At 1 PM, the riders' procession will assemble at the Badepark, and from 1:30 PM, around 250 festively decorated horses, teams, and carriages will parade through the town. The animals will be solemnly blessed at the Church of Our Lady. Afterwards, the grand Michaelifest with hearty catering will take place at the Badepark.
The Michaeliritt, the market, and the Michaelifest are free and open to all.
