Summer is over — the Almabtrieb from the Stoißer Alm
The Almabtrieb from the Stoißer Alm is one of the most traditional events in the Berchtesgadener Land district in southern Bavaria. Every year in September, when the alpine summer ends, around 40 young cattle return from the high Stoißer Alm on the Teisenberg mountain to their home stables around Teisendorf.
Course of the Day
From 1:00 PM, the animals on the alpine pasture are "aufgekranzt", meaning they are festively decorated with head adornments and floral wreaths. Around 2:00 PM, the procession begins its descent into the valley. The animals are expected around 4:00 PM at the hiking parking lot in Seiberstadt in the valley, where a "Ziachduo" plays traditional music on the Steirische Harmonika (diatonic button accordion) to accompany their homecoming.
Custom and Significance
The festive decoration of the cattle is an expression of gratitude for an accident-free summer on the alpine pastures. The Almabtrieb traditionally marks the end of the grazing season on the high alpine pastures. In the Berchtesgadener Land, this custom has a long history and is firmly rooted in the region's agricultural culture.
Catering and Atmosphere
The Freidling customs association provides catering with regional delicacies in the valley. The event is family-friendly and accessible with free admission. It is ideal for an excursion into the autumnal Berchtesgadener Land.
