Patronal festival at the Marienkirche in the Oberpfälzer Wald — Cham district
In the far east of Bavaria, where the Oberpfälzer Wald forms the border with the Czech Republic, lies the small community of Weiding with its Marienkirche. As everywhere in Bavaria, the Kirchweih here is not only a religious festival but also the village's most important occasion for meeting — generations come together, associations show their commitment, and former Weiding residents travel from all over the world.
Weiding belongs to the Gleißenberg administrative district in Cham, in the state of Bavaria. The community, with a few hundred inhabitants, is located directly on the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park and on the border with the Czech Plzeň district. The Marienkirche, consecrated in 1959/1960 and carefully maintained ever since, celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019 and its 65th in 2024.
The Marienkirche Weiding is looked after by the Dalking-Gleißenberg Parish Association. On the occasion of its anniversaries, doors, altarpiece, and interior furnishings have been restored in recent years — a clear sign of the parish's connection to "their" church. Even outside of the Kirchweih, the church is regularly the venue for pilgrimages, processions, and communal celebrations.
As in the neighboring communities of the Oberpfalz, the patronal festival follows a tried-and-tested choreography:
In the Cham and neighboring Schwandorf districts, Kirchweih festivals are part of Bavaria's densest calendar of customs — almost every village has its own date in autumn. Anyone who wants to experience authentic Oberpfalz customs will find a typical example in Weiding and its Marienkirche: small, heartfelt, supported by the parish and the associations.
The date of the Weiding Kirchweih 2026 has been confirmed by the Weiding community's event calendar. The exact schedule — start of the service, catering location, guest speakers, and music — will be announced in the weeks leading up to the patronal festival via the parish and on weiding.de.
The organizer is the Dalking-Gleißenberg parish community, supported by the associations and volunteers of the Weiding community.
