Kärwa in the Knoblauchsland
The Kirchweih Schnepfenreuth – Franconian 'Kärwa' – is a firmly established institution in the Knoblauchsland, the traditional vegetable-growing area in the north of Nuremberg. It is one of the numerous district Kirchweihen with which Nuremberg keeps its village customs alive in late summer and autumn.
Customs and Sociability
A Franconian Kärwa is more than a folk festival: it combines religious origins, village community, and exuberant festive spirit. Typical elements include the fairground attractions in the beer tent or festival tavern, rides and stalls, brass music, and traditional Kärwa customs with the 'Betzen' (Kärwabaum – Maypole) and festively dressed 'Kärwaboum' (Kirchweih boys) and 'Madli' (Kirchweih girls).
Schnepfenreuth – A Village in the City
Despite being incorporated into Nuremberg, Schnepfenreuth has retained its village character. Around Schnepfenreuther Hauptstraße, neighbours meet for the Kärwa – a meeting point for long-time residents, families, and guests from all over the city.
Part of the Nuremberg Kirchweih Season
The Kärwa Schnepfenreuth fits into the dense calendar of Nuremberg's district Kirchweihen, which are officially scheduled by the City of Nuremberg. It is an authentic piece of Franconian festival culture away from the major folk festivals.
