Middle Franconian Kirchweih with Kirchweih Dance by Lake Brombach
The Kirchweih Pfofeld is one of the most famous Kirchweihen in southern Middle Franconia, in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district by the Franconian Lake District (Lake Brombach, Lake Igelsbach). For several festival days in October, the town center transforms into a fairground with a beer tent, showmen, a festive church service, and catering by local clubs. What makes the Kirchweih Pfofeld unique in Franconia is its vibrantly maintained Kirchweih Dance.
Since 1985, Pfofeld has maintained its own folk dance group for children and adults, founded by Erwin Kolb, co-founder of the folk music group »Pfofelder Blechla«. On the Kirchweih Sundays, the dancers perform in Franconian traditional costume, presenting old dances – characteristic are the Fränkischer Dreher and the Zwiefacher, a dance where couple time and waltz time alternate. The tradition is passed on to the next generation under the direction of Claudia Schmoll and Tanja Rüger – a living example of cherished Franconian customs.
The program follows the classic Middle Franconian Kirchweih schedule: erecting the Kirchweih tree, opening evening in the festival tent, festive church service, Frühschoppen, beer tent operation with live music and festive evening, plus showman attractions, carousels, and catering by clubs. The highlight is the children's group's Kirchweih Dance on Sunday afternoon, which attracts a large audience of locals, visitors from the lake district, and dance enthusiasts every year.
Pfofeld is located in the heart of the Franconian Lake District, directly on Lake Igelsbach and near Lake Brombach. The small municipality consists of several districts and is known in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district for its particularly dense club life and vibrant customs culture. The Kirchweih, along with the Pfingstweihe weekend, is one of the most important dates in the community's annual calendar.
The Kirchweih Pfofeld 2026 takes place from Thursday, October 8, to Monday, October 12, 2026. The organizers are the municipality of Pfofeld and local clubs.
The detailed daily program – opening evening in the festival tent, festive church service on Kirchweih Sunday (Oct 11), performance by the Pfofeld folk dance group, beer tent evenings, and festive closing on Kirchweih Monday (Oct 12) – will be published by the municipality in advance on pfofeld.de.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published shortly before the Kirchweih on pfofeld.de. The classic Middle Franconian schedule is expected:
