Kirta in the Chiemgau

The Kirchweih in Obing, Pittenhart and Kienberg is the traditional Kirta of these three neighbouring communities in the Traunstein district, Upper Bavaria, Bavaria. According to old Bavarian custom, the Kirchweih is celebrated on the third Sunday in October, the Kirchweihsonntag, supplemented by the Kirchweihmontag.

Old Bavarian Custom

The Kirta is deeply rooted in Upper Bavarian festival culture. Festival activities in inns and festival halls, brass band music, Bavarian delicacies, and the convivial gathering of the village community characterize the two festival days. The celebration on the third Sunday in October follows the traditional rule "Kirchweih is on the third Sunday in October".

Joint Tradition of Three Communities

Obing, Pittenhart and Kienberg maintain the Kirta according to a common tradition. The administrative community of Obing bundles the events of the three municipalities in its event calendar. The Kirchweih is an expression of regional identity in the Chiemgau and a highlight of autumnal village life.
