Traditional Franconian Kirchweih in the Hahnenkammland at the end of September
The Kirchweih Meinheim is a classic Franconian Kerwa — a multi-day folk and club festival centered around the consecration of the local church. As in many villages in Middle Franconia, the Kirchweih is celebrated on the traditional date at the end of September — the main Kirchweih weekend is the fourth Sunday in September (Erntedanksonntag - Thanksgiving Sunday) and the following days. This date tradition is closely linked to the agricultural harvest season.
The program follows the classic Kirwa rhythm: opening on Thursday or Friday evening with a beer tapping ceremony, festival tent program with live music, Frühschoppen on Sunday morning with brass music, a parade on Kirchweih Sunday with traditional costume groups, marksmen, and floats, and closing on Monday with the traditional Kirwa tree felling.
Meinheim is a small municipality with just under 1,000 inhabitants in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Middle Franconia (state of Bavaria). The area is known as Hahnenkammland — named after the striking Hahnenkamm ridge that shapes the landscape. Between the Altmühltal in the south and the Middle Franconian plain lies a charming hilly landscape with traditional villages where the Franconian Kirchweih culture is particularly vibrant.
The Meinheimer Kirchweih is part of the Fränkische Kirchweih network — a supra-regional association that documents and promotes the intangible cultural heritage of the Franconian Kirchweih. It is also listed in the annual Kirchweih calendar of the Nürnberger Nachrichten for the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen region.
The 2026 edition of the Meinheimer Kirchweih follows the classic Kirwa rhythm over five days. It opens on Thursday, September 24th, with a beer tapping ceremony, followed by four more days of festivities with catering, a music program, and an amusement park.
The highlight is Kirchweih Sunday (September 27th) with Frühschoppen, a parade, and a particularly attractive day program. The closing takes place on Monday with the traditional Kirwa tree felling and the end of the festival.
