Autumn Kirchweih with a Long Tradition
The Kirchweih Marktgraitz is a traditional Herbstkirchweih (autumn Kirchweih) in the Lichtenfels district of Upper Franconia. Marktgraitz is a small market town with around 1,300 inhabitants, whose festival calendar has been shaped by the Kirchweih weekend for generations. The Kirchweih is traditionally celebrated in October and brings together local clubs, hosts, and the parish community around the festival service.
Five-Day Programme Framework
The festival calendar follows a classic structure for Upper Franconia: on Thursday and Friday, hosts and club venues open their doors with Kirchweih specialties. On Kirchweih Sunday, the parish service at 9:00 AM is the focal point, followed by a communal festival lunch. Monday and Tuesday traditionally conclude the Kirchweih with club evenings and "Nachkärwa" (post-Kirchweih celebrations).
Marktgraitz in the Obermain Valley
Marktgraitz is located in the Obermain Valley near Burgkunstadt and Lichtenfels, a region whose identity is strongly shaped by Catholic customs. The Kirchweih is cherished as the most important festival of the year in many surrounding villages, making Marktgraitz a destination for guests from the entire Lichtenfels region and the neighbouring Coburg region. Tradition and hospitality characterise the five festival days.
