One of Bavaria's largest free open-air festivals on Pegnitz's Schloßberg
Since 1994, Waldstock e.V. has organized its wonderful, free open-air festival on Pegnitz's Schloßberg. "Free and Outdoors" is the motto: free admission, free camping, family-friendly – a festival that thrives on idealism, volunteer work, and a love for music. It is supported by, among others, the Federal Cultural Foundation (BKM), ByteFM, and the vfm group.
The festival takes place on the festival meadow on Schloßberg (Leibnizweg 4, 91257 Pegnitz) – an idyllic stage landscape surrounded by forest on the outskirts of the Upper Franconian town of Pegnitz. The natural setting, the relaxed atmosphere, and the absence of commercial marketing contribute to Waldstock's special charm.
Friday evening is traditionally dedicated to calmer sounds: folk, singer-songwriter, jazz, and world-pop. Saturday is the main day with the most packed program – from regional acts of the Franconian scene to international newcomers. The booking deliberately focuses on discoveries off the beaten track: indie, alternative, rock, and crossover.
Waldstock sees itself as a family-friendly festival – admission and camping are free, financed through donations, funding, and beverage sales. This combination of a high-quality lineup and free access has made Waldstock one of Bavaria's largest and most popular free open-air festivals.
Pegnitz is located in the Bayreuth district, at the transition to Franconian Switzerland and the Franconian Jura. The town is a starting point for hiking and cycling tours – many festival visitors combine Waldstock with a weekend in the nature of Upper Franconia.
On July 10th and 11th, 2026, the Waldstock Festival will once again take place on Pegnitz's Schloßberg – free, family-friendly, multi-day. Confirmed via the official website waldstock.de as well as festivalsunited.com and festival-alarm.com.
