Traditional Upper Franconian Kirchweih (church consecration festival) around the baroque castle church of the Holy Trinity
Lahm is a small district of the municipality of Itzgrund in the southern district of Coburg, on the edge of the Coburg region and not far from the Upper Franconian-Middle Franconian border. Its Schlossplatz (castle square) with the Schlosskirche zur Heiligen Dreieinigkeit (Castle Church of the Holy Trinity) forms one of the most remarkable sacred buildings in Upper Franconia – and once a year it transforms into a festival ground.
The castle church was built in 1732 and houses an equally old organ by the organ builder Johann Christian Herbst. In 2025, this ensemble of church and original organ was recognized as a national cultural monument. Those who come to the Kirchweih are therefore not just celebrating any village festival, but one that takes place in one of the most beautiful preserved baroque interiors in the region.
The Kirchweih begins on Sunday morning with the Festgottesdienst (festival service) as a family service in the festival tent directly in front of the church – accompanied by the brass band. Afterwards, the traditional flea market opens around the church and can be visited until late afternoon. The carousel spins for the children, the Lahm Volunteer Fire Brigade sells sausages and drinks, and in the parish garden, the church community invites you to Kirchweih coffee with homemade cakes.
The organizers are the Evangelical Lutheran Parish of Lahm-Itzgrund, the TSV 1961 Lahm Itzgrund, and the local Volunteer Fire Brigade. The festival is open to all, and admission is free. It is a typical Upper Franconian Kirchweih (also called "Kirwa" or "Kerwa" regionally) – the annual patron saint's festival of a church, and one of the most important village festivals in Bavaria.
Itzgrund is located in the south of the Coburg district, at the transition from Upper Franconia to the Upper Bavarian Main Valley. The region is characterized by the Itz river valley and its castles and palaces. A Kirchweih in Lahm can be well combined with a visit to the nearby Veste Coburg or a walk through the rural Itzgrund.
The Kirchweih Lahm 2026 will be celebrated on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The venue, as every year, is the Schlossplatz with the baroque castle church at its center.
The day begins with the festival service, designed as a family service in the festival tent in front of the church. Immediately afterwards, the flea market stalls, the FFW Lahm, and the church community open their stands for food and drinks. A new FFW vehicle will be officially inaugurated as part of the Kirchweih. Until late afternoon, the festival offers a relaxed gathering for families, clubs, and guests from all over the Itzgrund region.
Free admission. Food and drinks at local prices.
By car via the A73 (Coburg-Süd), then towards Itzgrund-Lahm. Parking spaces around the Schlossplatz and on the outskirts of the village. By train and bus: Regional train to Coburg, then local bus towards Itzgrund.
Free admission. Food and drinks are offered at popular prices.
Before or after the festival service, it is worth taking a look inside the castle church to see the historic Herbst organ from 1732.
