Traditional Franconian Autumn Kerwa in the Bad Windsheim region
In the Franconian cultural area, the Kirchweih is the biggest village festival of the year. It dates back to the consecration day of the local church and is traditionally celebrated over several days in Middle Franconia – with a festival procession, shooting, music, and plenty of bratwurst. In Illesheim, where the Evangelical Lutheran tradition is deeply rooted, the "Kerwa" has preserved this character to this day.
The Illesheim Kirchweih 2026 will take place from October 22nd to 26th. The meeting point is the village square on Kirchstraße in the centre of the village. Showmen set up their carousels and stalls, bratwurst and mulled wine stands attract visitors, and in the taverns, people eat, drink, and dance. Over several days, the market atmosphere, festival tent, and church service combine to create a typical Franconian traditional weekend.
Even though the exact programme varies slightly from year to year, fixed elements return in the four districts of Illesheim (Illesheim, Sontheim, Urfersheim, Westheim), which are expected again in 2026:
The municipality of Illesheim is located in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim and comprises the districts of Illesheim, Sontheim, Urfersheim, and Westheim. It is regionally known for the Storck Barracks, a former US garrison. Community life shapes village life – from the ZIV (Association of Illesheim Clubs) to the volunteer fire brigades and the shooting, sports, and singing clubs. The Kerwa is the joint highlight of this community work.
At a Franconian Kerwa, the classics are served: Franconian bratwurst from a charcoal grill, Schäufele (pork shoulder) with dumplings, Sauerkraut (sauerkraut), Schlachtschüssel, accompanied by beer from the breweries of the Bad Windsheim region. Sweet specialities – Kerwakuchen (Kerwa cake), Krapfen (doughnuts), Lebkuchen (gingerbread) – are also part of it.
The Illesheim autumn Kerwa 2026 is spread over five days and involves the entire village. Between the village square, the church, the inns, and the festival stalls, that special Franconian Kerwa atmosphere is created, which can neither be prepared nor replicated – it must be celebrated.
Showmen set up carousels and stalls on Kirchstraße, associations organise coffee afternoons and festival evenings, and the Protestant parish celebrates the patron saint's day. The highlight is traditionally Sunday with the church service and the procession of the associations through the village.
The final detailed programme will be published in the municipal gazette of Illesheim and on the municipal website in the weeks before the Kerwa.
