Kärwa in the Nürnberger Land
The Kirchweih Grub is the traditional patron saint's day Kärwa (traditional festival) of the Grub district of the municipality of Burgthann in the Nürnberger Land district. Burgthann is located about 20 km southeast of Nuremberg on the edge of the Franconian Jura and on the Main-Danube Canal; Grub is one of seven districts with its own Kirchweih tradition – a typical example of Middle Franconian festival culture.
Course of a Franconian Kärwa
The Kärwa follows the classic Middle Franconian pattern: raising of the decorated Kärwabaum (festival maypole) on Friday evening, followed by the festive church service on Saturday or Sunday, beer service in the festival tent, a concert with Franconian brass bands, Franconian tavern cuisine (sausages, Schäufele, sauerkraut), and a dance evening with a live band. The showmen set up a carousel and shooting gallery in the village center; clubs and gastronomy jointly organize the catering.
Burgthann and its Kärwa Series
Burgthann cultivates a particularly dense Kirchweih culture: In addition to the main Kirchweih (Burgthanner Kirchweih) on the last weekend in June, the districts of Grub, Schwarzenbach, Oberferrieden, Mimberg, Unterferrieden, and Ezelsdorf host their own Kärwas, spread throughout the summer. The Kärwa Grub takes place at the beginning of July, directly after the main Kirchweih.
