St. John's Kirchweih in Burgthann
The Burgthann Kirchweih – also known as St. John's Kirchweih – is a traditional local festival in the municipality of Burgthann in the Nürnberger Land district, on the southern edge of the Franconian Jura. It is celebrated annually around St. John's Day (June 24th) on the last weekend of June and is the main Kirchweih of the main town – amidst a whole series of Kirchweihen held by the Burgthann districts throughout the summer.
Program and Schedule
The Kirchweih follows the classic Middle Franconian pattern: erecting the decorated Kirchweih tree, festive church service in the parish church of St. Johannes, beer stands in the festival grounds, dancing and music in the evenings, plus showman's rides and carousels for families. Clubs, gastronomy, and the municipality organize the festival together – a packed weekend of customs, conviviality, and Franconian tavern culture.
Burgthann and the Nürnberger Land
Burgthann is located about 20 km southeast of Nuremberg, directly on the Main-Danube Canal and at the foot of the Franconian Jura. The municipality is known for its castle (Burgthann), its historic town center, and its particularly dense Kirchweih culture: In addition to the main Kirchweih in Burgthann, the districts of Grub, Schwarzenbach, Oberferrieden, Ezelsdorf, Unterferrieden, and Mimberg maintain their own Kirchweih traditions. The Burgthann Kirchweih on the last weekend of June kicks off this series anew each year.
