Culinary Volksfest since 1985 on Alois-Jacobs-Platz
When the aroma of Schwenkbraten, Italian pasta, Vietnamese soup, and homemade cakes fills the Alois-Jacobs-Platz in Beckingen one weekend in August, it's Schmaus time. Since 1985, the community of clubs, under the leadership of initiator Peter Zenner, has been organizing what is probably the most enjoyable Volksfest in the Merzig-Wadern district.
The name "Schmaus" is more than just a linguistic play. The organizers see it as a reference to medieval harvest festivals, where communities feasted together. Today, this is reflected in an unusual mix: while Saarland classics like Schwenkbraten, Lyoner, and Dibbelabbes are traditionally present, international stands — from Italy and Greece to Asia — offer a culinary world tour that surprises many visitors in a village of 7,000 inhabitants.
The Schmaus is traditionally opened with the barrel tapping by the mayor, a rather Bavarian tradition celebrated in Beckingen with Saarland cheerfulness. A unique feature is the Schmaus Queen, who is newly elected each year and opens the festival with a royal smile — most recently Queen Claire I.
On Sundays, the Vereinigte Blasmusik Beckingen plays for the Frühschoppen (morning pint), and on Saturday afternoon, a children's program with a bouncy castle, face painting (Mystic Couture), football darts, and games from TV Beckingen is organized. The late Saturday evening is crowned by a large raffle with attractive prizes, followed by live and party music until late into the night.
The real strength of the Schmaus lies in its broad base of clubs: sports clubs, carnival societies, church and youth groups, heritage associations, music clubs, and many others set up the stands. Family recipes are passed down from generation to generation, and some specialties are only available at the Schmaus — an opportunity to experience the Beckingen club scene up close.
The official event directory of the municipality of Beckingen lists the Schmaus 2026 for the weekend around the Feast of the Assumption — Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16. With this 41st edition, the festival continues its unbroken run since 1985.
The well-rehearsed program structure is expected: Opening on Saturday morning with barrel tapping by the mayor and presentation of the Schmaus Queen, children's program in the afternoon, raffle in the late evening, and morning pint with the Vereinigte Blasmusik Beckingen on Sunday.
Detailed band program and list of club stands will be published on beckingen.de from July 2026.
