Wuppertal's big benefit neighbourhood festival since 1972 — 28th edition on July 4, 2026
The Cronenberger Werkzeugkiste is a unique format: a neighbourhood festival that is also a benefit event, originating from a specific social initiative. In the early 1970s, volunteer firefighters from Wuppertal-Cronenberg encountered precarious conditions at a facility for people with disabilities. Together with Cronenberg tool manufacturers and associations, they organized a benefit festival — the birth of the Werkzeugkiste. It has been held every two years since then. The 28th edition takes place on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
The guiding principle is 'Understanding Each Other – Living Together' — not just a slogan, but programmatic: The Werkzeugkiste has inclusion and mutual support as its identity. Over the 27 previous editions, more than 1.4 million euros have been raised for social institutions.
Over 1,000 volunteers make the Werkzeugkiste happen — from setup and dismantling to catering. Around 40,000 visitors gather on the festival day.
The donations go equally to facilities for people with disabilities in Wuppertal — and in the partner city Schwerin — as well as to local social and charitable organizations in Cronenberg. This international component also makes the Werkzeugkiste a symbol of the East-West German city partnership.
Wuppertal-Cronenberg is located in the south of Wuppertal at an altitude of about 320 metres — the highest elevation in the city — and is home to several world market leaders in tool manufacturing. This industrial heritage and the strong network of local associations shape the identity of the Werkzeugkiste. Wuppertal is the most important city in the Bergisches Land region in North Rhine-Westphalia, world-famous for its suspension railway and Pina Bausch.
One day of neighbourhood festival and benefit action combined. Over 1,000 volunteers, around 40,000 visitors, proceeds for facilities for people with disabilities in Wuppertal and its partner city Schwerin. The motto: 'Understanding Each Other – Living Together'.
