Kärwa in the Knoblauchsland
The Kirchweih Großgründlach, affectionately called »Gründlacher Kärwa« by locals, is one of the most famous Kirchweihen in the Nuremberg city area and is considered the largest Kärwa in the Knoblauchsland – that traditional vegetable-growing region between Nuremberg, Fürth, and Erlangen in the state of Bavaria. Großgründlach is a village-like district in the north of Nuremberg, which celebrates its Kirchweih with great commitment from its clubs and Kärwaburschen.
The Erntedankzug
The highlight of the Gründlacher Kärwa is the Erntedank- und Festzug (Harvest Thanksgiving and Festival Parade). In the Knoblauchsland, such parades are an integral part of Kirchweih tradition: horse-drawn wagons, lavishly loaded with vegetables and adorned with flowers, parade through the town, honoring the harvest of the region's vegetable gardens. Up to 2,500 spectators line the streets to witness the colorful spectacle.
Festival Tent, Ferris Wheel, and Amusement Park
Around the Kirchweih, a festival tent, catering with Franconian specialties, and an amusement park ensure a lively atmosphere. A Ferris wheel offers panoramic views over the flat Knoblauchsland – a landmark of the Gründlacher Kärwa, visible from afar. Bratwurst, beer, and Franconian conviviality are, of course, part of the experience.
Tradition and Club Life
The Kärwa is supported by the Gründlacher Kärwaburschen and the Vorstadtverein Alt-Gründlach. It exemplifies the vibrant Franconian Kirchweih culture that continues to shape the annual cycle in Nuremberg and its surroundings to this day. Anyone wishing to experience authentic Knoblauchsland customs will find themselves in the right place at the Gründlacher Kärwa.
