Kirchardt Parish Festival — Three Parishes Meet
On Sunday, June 28, 2026, the Protestant parish of Kirchardt invites you to the annual Parish Festival — an all-day event of fellowship and hospitality that brings together the three districts of Berwangen, Bockschaft, and Kirchardt. These three villages in the western Kraichgau together form a Protestant parish structure, and the joint festival is the annual highlight where members of all three parishes come together.
Program — Service, Meal, Fellowship
The program follows the classic format of a German Protestant parish festival:
- Morning Service — usually a joint festival service with pastors from all three districts, musically accompanied by the brass choir
- Fellowship Meal — hospitality afterwards by the parish women's and men's groups; classic: Spätzle with roast pork, followed by cake and coffee
- Afternoon Program with musical accompaniment, fellowship café, children's program (craft activities, games, Sunday school play)
- Evening Wind-down usually with a short devotion or prayer service
Hospitality — Swabian Specialties
The hospitality is provided by the volunteer helpers from the three parishes — usually the women's and men's groups together. The culinary specialties are classic Swabian-Kraichgau:
- Spätzle with roast pork or lentils as the main meal
- Maultaschen in broth for a midday snack
- Homemade Cakes — Black Forest Gateau, yeast braid, fruit cakes made from seasonal fruit — at the cake buffet
- Coffee, juice, water — non-alcoholic, as it is a parish festival
Musical Accompaniment
Several musical groups accompany the festival:
- Brass choir of the Protestant parish plays traditional hymns and welcoming music
- Parish choirs with songs from the Protestant hymnal
- Occasionally kindergarten or Sunday school children with short songs
- Instrumental soloists from the parish (organ, piano, guitar, flute)
Berwangen, Bockschaft, and Kirchardt — Three Districts
Kirchardt is a municipality in the Heilbronn district, in the western Kraichgau. It consists of the main town Kirchardt and the districts Berwangen and Bockschaft. The municipality has a total population of around 5,700. The Kraichgau is a rural hilly landscape between Heidelberg and Heilbronn with vineyards, scattered fruit meadows, fields, and small forests. The Protestant parish structure unites the three districts into a spiritual entity; the joint parish festival is an expression of this unity.
Kraichgau — The Rural-Protestant Cultural Landscape
Historically, the Kraichgau was strongly influenced by the Reformation and is predominantly Protestant — most parishes still belong to the Evangelical State Church in Württemberg-Baden today. The parish festivals are an important social event in these villages — unlike in the Catholic regions of southern Germany, where the Kirchweih (church consecration festival) or patron saint's day is celebrated, the Protestant parish festival, as a common gathering, shapes the church identity. Hospitality, fellowship, joint prayer, and musical accompaniment are the fixed elements.
