Berlin's biggest family festival on 50,000 m² in Volkspark Wuhlheide
FEZ-Berlin (Freizeit- und Erholungszentrum) is Europe's largest non-profit leisure and recreation centre for children and young people. Located in the heart of Volkspark Wuhlheide, in the Oberschöneweide district (Treptow-Köpenick borough), it offers workshops, theatre, water sports, and interactive stations on a 50,000 m² site throughout the year. The annual Children's Day Festival on the Pentecost weekend is the highlight of the year's calendar — three days of maximum program density.
The festival offers a festival within a festival for children:
The motto changes annually and sets thematic accents. In 2026, it will be 'My Rights, My Voice!' — a direct address to the theme of children's rights and participation. Workshops, talks, and performances will build on this, and the Democracy Market will be centrally located.
The FEZ was established in 1979 as the 'Pionierpalast' (Pioneer Palace) of the GDR and was gradually repurposed after reunification. Today, it is a non-profit limited liability company (GmbH), supported by the State of Berlin. The Children's Day Festival on the Pentecost weekend attracts over 30,000 visitors each year and is considered the largest urban family festival in Berlin.
Volkspark Wuhlheide surrounding the FEZ is one of Berlin's largest city parks, featuring pine forests, meadows, a park stage, and a zoo nearby. Visitors to the Children's Day Festival should plan time for a stroll.
The 2026 edition traditionally falls on the Pentecost weekend and Whit Monday. The motto 'My Rights, My Voice!' connects the FEZ Children's Day Festival with the themes of children's rights and political education — fitting with the supra-regional World Children's Day in September and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
