Christmas in the Nordic Capital
Kiel, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, a city-state, stages its Christmas market under the motto "Romantic. Nordic. Real.". The concept deliberately focuses on a maritime, Baltic Sea-influenced atmosphere, distinguishing it from many Southern German Christmas markets. The central figure is the gnome Ki(e)lian, who attracts families with his "Gnome Flight" performances three times daily.

Pre-Christmas Atmosphere
As in previous years, the 2026 Christmas Village will extend over several locations in Kiel's city center. The main market is Rathausplatz with a large Christmas tree, light canopy, and main stage, complemented by the historic Holstenplatz and the winter market at Bootshafen.
2026 Program
- Gnome flights daily at 3 PM, 5 PM, and 7 PM on Rathausplatz
- Handicraft market on Holstenplatz
- Maritime winter market atmosphere at Asmus-Bremer-Platz/Bootshafen
- Concerts and choirs on the main stage
- Ice rink (Bootshafen)
- Mulled wine and punch in regional mugs
Programme Christmas Village Kiel 2026
The detailed 2026 program will be published at the end of October 2026 at weihnachtsdorf-kiel.de. Based on experience, the following highlights are expected:
Opening (likely November 20th, 2026)
- 11:00 AM — Doors open at all locations
- 3:00 PM — First Gnome Flight Show with Ki(e)lian on Rathausplatz
- 5:00 PM — Official opening with the lighting ceremony by the Mayor
Daily Program (until December 23rd)
- 11:00 AM–9:00 PM — Market stalls open (Fri./Sat. until 10:00 PM)
- 3:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 7:00 PM — Gnome Flights on Rathausplatz

Kiel Central Station is a 5-minute walk from Rathausplatz. Train connections from Hamburg in 1 hour. By car via the A215 — use parking garages in the city center.
Opening Hours
Daily 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Fridays and Saturdays extended until 10:00 PM. Closed on Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead).
