About Schwörfest Esslingen

From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, Esslingen am Neckar celebrates its traditional Schwörfest — a combination of the historic oath day and a modern citizens' festival. It kicks off with the solemn oath ceremony on Friday in the Schwörhof, where the Lord Mayor takes the oath of allegiance before the citizens of Esslingen. Over the three festival days, Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt transform into a lively festival mile with live music, stage program, culinary delights, and on Saturday, the large Esslingen flea market. In 2026, only Esslingen clubs will participate, as the renovated market square will not be available.

Esslinger Schwörfest — when history becomes a folk festival

The Esslinger Schwörfest is more than a city festival — it is a living piece of medieval civic tradition. From July 3rd to 5th, 2026, Rathausplatz, Hafenmarkt, and the Esslingen city center will transform into a festival mile, combining historical dignity with folk festival joie de vivre. The Schwörtag (Oath Day) has a history of over 700 years in Esslingen: On this day, the mayor used to swear an oath on the city's statutes before the citizens — a duty of accountability that is symbolically continued to this day.

Oath Ceremony in the Schwörhof

The prelude on Friday, July 3rd, is the solemn oath ceremony in the historic Schwörhof. In front of the assembled council chamber, the Lord Mayor of Esslingen takes the oath — a promise of the rule of law, civic welfare, and transparency. The ceremony will be broadcast live, and attendance is public. Afterwards, the traditional festival procession moves to the Rathausplatz, where the actual citizens' festival is opened with the tapping of the first keg. Here you will experience history and the present in a seamless transition.

Festival Mile on Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt

Life pulsates on Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt during the three festival days. In 2026, due to the market square renovation, these will be the only festival areas — clubs, citizens, and restaurateurs will concentrate on these two traditional Esslingen squares. Catering will be provided exclusively by Esslingen clubs: Swabian specialties, grilled sausages, Maultaschen, Esslingen sparkling wine and wines from the Esslingen winegrowers' cooperative, Württemberg's oldest sparkling wine cellar region, plus beer from Schwabenbräu. Your consumption directly supports Esslingen's club life.

Live Music and Stage Program

On the stages, live bands, DJs, dance groups, and theater performances alternate. The program is deliberately intergenerational — a morning pint with brass music in the morning, pop and rock in the afternoon, dance music in the late evening. The Hafenmarkt offers a quieter program with acoustic acts and jazz, while the Rathausplatz provides the louder festival atmosphere. In the open Bürgerrathaus (Citizens' Town Hall), there will be readings, exhibitions, and guided tours — history is also conveyed here.

Large Flea Market on Saturday

On Saturday, the traditional Esslingen flea market takes place — one of the largest in Württemberg. Hundreds of stalls along the streets of Esslingen's old town offer antiques, bric-a-brac, collectibles, books, clothing, and curiosities. The flea market attracts visitors from the entire Stuttgart metropolitan region and makes Saturday the busiest day of the Schwörfest.

Esslingen am Neckar — one of Württemberg's most beautiful old towns

The old imperial city of Esslingen am Neckar, with around 92,000 inhabitants, is one of Württemberg's historical jewels. The old town with its half-timbered houses, the medieval castle complex, the old town hall, and the Kessler sparkling wine cellars — the oldest in Germany — is among the best-preserved in southern Germany. Esslingen is a university city, an industrial location, and a tourist destination all at once. The Schwörfest is the social highlight of the year, bringing the entire citizenry together.

Schwörfest Esslingen — edition 2026

The Esslingen Schwörfest 2026 runs from Friday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 5th. Oath ceremony on Friday in the Schwörhof, followed by a festival mile on Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt with catering by Esslingen clubs. Saturday features a large flea market. In 2026, the event is spatially limited due to market square renovation.

2026 Edition — Schwörfest Under Special Conditions

The 2026 edition takes place under challenging spatial conditions: The Esslingen market square is being renovated and will not be available. The city has therefore concentrated the festival on Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt. This solution leads to a greater density — the atmosphere will be more intimate, and the club catering will be even more central.

In 2026, only Esslingen clubs will participate. This strengthens the local character and makes the event a purely Esslingen citizens' festival.
