Autumn market and Sunday shopping in the medieval Old Town of Esslingen
Esslingen am Neckar — with a good 95,000 inhabitants, the fourth-largest city in the Stuttgart region — is famous for its well-preserved medieval old town. Half-timbered facades, narrow alleys, the market square with the Frauenkirche, the Innere Brückentor gate, and the castle on the hill form one of the most beautiful cityscapes in Southern Germany. The Esslinger Herbst utilizes this backdrop — on November 8, 2026, the city center will transform into an autumnal marketplace.
The main axis of the autumn market runs along Ritterstraße — the historic main street of Esslingen's old town — and ends at the Old Town Hall. Around 80 exhibitors will set up their stalls along this route: artisans with pottery, felt, wood art, glasswork, jewelry, and textiles; antique dealers with furniture, porcelain, toys, and curiosities; second-hand boutiques with vintage fashion and designer pieces. The mix of artistic, antique, and vintage items makes the market a strolling experience.
Parallel to the main market, a classic flea market will take place at Blarerplatz — from collector's bargains to random finds. Private sellers and professional dealers will bring the entire spectrum of the flea market world. Those looking for vintage fashion, old records, historical toys, or unique curiosities should plan to spend time here.
At Hafenmarkt, the HEIGES Spielparadies awaits — a dedicated family area with play opportunities for children, hands-on stations, and cozy seating areas for parents. This makes the Esslinger Herbst a complete multi-generational event: parents stroll, children play, and the family meets afterward for a bratwurst or a warm tea in the old town's gastronomy.
Esslingen's local specialty shops in the city center will open their doors on Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM. Boutiques with fashion, bookstores, toy stores, concept stores, and manufactories will welcome visitors. Sunday shopping is an important economic pillar for brick-and-mortar retail and an invitation to shop consciously in owner-operated businesses.
"Cozy fashion, autumnal decorations, and warm tea" — the official motto perfectly captures the atmosphere. Early November in Esslingen — it's the transition period between the golden autumn and the start of winter. You stroll through the alleys in a wool coat and scarf, hear background music, smell chestnuts from a wood-fired oven, and enjoy the glow of the first Advent lights in the windows.
On November 8, 2026, Ritterstraße, Blarerplatz, Marktplatz, and Hafenmarkt will transform into a cohesive autumn experience space. Esslingen's city center will show its most beautiful side, nestled in the medieval half-timbered backdrop, with the first autumnal decorations and a taste of the Christmas season.
