The Kerwe Ottersheim is the annual Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Palatinate municipality of Ottersheim in the Donnersbergkreis and part of the rich Kerwe calendar of the Göllheim administrative district. As everywhere in the Palatinate, the Kerwe – short for Kirchweih – has its religious origin in the consecration festival of the local church, but today it is primarily a four-day village festival celebrating the community.
The event is organized by the municipality of Ottersheim together with local clubs. The venue is the festival grounds or the festival tent in the village center. The Göllheim administrative district, with its member villages – including Albisheim, Bubenheim, Dreisen, Einselthum, Göllheim, Immesheim, Lautersheim, Marnheim, Ottersheim, Rüssingen, Standenbühl, Weitersweiler, and Zellertal – preserves this tradition throughout the year.
Palatinate Kerwe Tradition
At the heart of it is the typical Palatinate Kerwe tradition: the Kerweborsch – the young men of the village – bring the Kerwe to life according to a fixed ritual. On the opening evening, the Kerweparrer delivers a humorous Kerwerede (Kerwe speech), in which the events and personalities of the past year in the village are humorously scrutinized. At the end of the festival days, the Kerwe is symbolically dug up again or burned – a custom that emphasizes the cyclical return of the festival.
Music, Dance, and Gastronomy
Over the four festival days, dance evenings with live music or a DJ alternate with morning pint gatherings (Frühschoppen) on Sunday and Monday mornings and family afternoons. Local gastronomy provides hearty Palatinate specialties such as Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork and potatoes), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwurst (fried sausage), and of course, the appropriate Palatinate wine from the surrounding growing regions. Coffee and cake, fries, and fried pastries are also not to be missed.
Social Significance
For the people of Ottersheim, the Kerwe is much more than a folk festival (Volksfest): it is an opportunity for former villagers to meet again, an occasion for family reunions, and an important contribution to club life. Proceeds from the festival often benefit the youth work of the local clubs.
