Traditional Palatinate Kerwe on the first weekend of October
Knittelsheim is one of the smaller municipalities in the Bellheim collective municipality, which gives the Kerwe a particularly intimate character. Unlike the large town Kerwen, the Knittelsheim Kerwe is strongly characterized by direct contact between hosts and guests: many visitors know each other personally here; here, people sing, dance, and talk about the small happenings of village life.
Despite its manageable size, the Knittelsheim Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate custom structure: tapping of the first keg to open, the Kerwerede (Kerwe speech) by the Kerweparrer (Kerwe pastor) with tongue-in-cheek commentary on village life, Kerwetanz (Kerwe dance) in the evening, Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday, and the Kerwe winding down on Monday or Tuesday evening.
The Knittelsheim clubs run the festival catering. Palatinate wine from local vintners from the growing region between Bellheim and Edesheim, draft beer, and wine spritzers (Schorle) are available at the bar. Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (Tarte flambée), Sauerkraut, and desserts from the club kitchens complement the offerings.
Knittelsheim is located between Bellheim and Knittelsheim-Ottersheim (a separate municipality) in the southern Vorderpfalz region. The Bellheim collective municipality unites several communities in the region, and many visitors to the Kerwe come from neighboring towns. The first weekend of October is traditionally the Kerwe date in Knittelsheim.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Knittelsheim local municipality in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Opening on Saturday evening (German Unity Day) with keg tapping and Kerwerede, family afternoon and Kerwe Frühschoppen on Sunday, Kerwe winding down on Monday.
