Upper Franconian Pentecost Kerwa with Street Festival at the Bauhof
The Himmelkron Kerwa is a traditional Franconian Pentecost Kerwa in the Kulmbach district, at the transition between the Frankenwald and the Fichtelgebirge. It differs from most Kirchweihen (church consecration festivals) in that it is not organized by a single organizer, but is supported by the entire club life of the village – each major club contributes its own Kerwa event, and the municipality crowns the weekend with a large street festival on Whit Monday.
The festival begins as early as the week before Pentecost with the Kerwa-Schlachtschüssel by the local breeders' club (KTZV) at the Kleintierzüchterheim and the Kerwaessen by TSV Himmelkron at the TSV gymnasium restaurant. On Whit Saturday and Sunday, the Kerwa events of the Volunteer Fire Department at the Bauhof follow, with catering, live music, and club evenings. The grand finale on Whit Monday is the large street festival of the municipality and all clubs, which transforms the town center around the Bauhof into an open festival mile.
A special feature of Himmelkron is Gramppus, a local beer mixed drink that has been served since 1993 on Whit Monday from 12 p.m. Himmelkron cultivates a distinct beer culture – not least through the Himmelkron Homebrewers' Club, which is also traditionally represented at the Kerwa. With Kulmbach as a nearby center of the Upper Franconian brewing industry, this fits well: the region is one of the most densely populated brewing landscapes in Europe.
Himmelkron is located in the Kulmbach district in Upper Franconia, on the A9 motorway between Bayreuth and Hof. The town is primarily known for the former Cistercian nunnery Himmelkron and for its particularly vibrant club culture. The Kerwa and the street festival have been the social highlight of the municipality's Pentecost calendar for decades – complemented by the nearby Kliesterer Zeltkerwa.
The Himmelkron Kerwa 2026 is spread over several days and locations around Pentecost. As early as Thursday, May 21, the KTZV invites you to the Kerwa-Schlachtschüssel at the Kleintierzüchterheim, followed on Friday, May 22, by the Kerwaessen by TSV Himmelkron at the TSV club house.
On Whit Saturday, May 23, and Whit Sunday, May 24, the Himmelkron Volunteer Fire Department takes over with the main Kerwa events at the Bauhof. The highlight is the large street festival on Whit Monday, May 25, which the municipality organizes together with all local clubs at the Bauhof – with a stage program, club stands, catering, and the traditional Gramppus beer service starting at 12 p.m.
