Traditional Pentecost funfair on the Unterer Marktplatz — three days of Volksfest in the Stör town
The Kellinghusener Pfingstjahrmarkt is part of a proven annual cycle for the town: Spring funfair at Pentecost, pottery market in August, Christmas market in December. Each of these events shapes a part of the annual calendar and brings the citizens of the town together — in spring, it's the Pentecost weekend when the Unterer Marktplatz transforms into a festival ground with rides and stalls.
As with many North German funfairs, the program consists of a mix of rides (carousels, dodgems, children's chain carousel), food stalls (bratwurst, candied almonds, crêpes, candy floss), and showman's stalls (shooting gallery, tombola, dart throwing). Unlike the Volksfests with a large beer tent component, the focus in Kellinghusen is on family-friendliness — parents with children, grandparents with grandchildren, teenagers in the evening.
The festival traditionally runs from Pentecost Saturday to Pentecost Monday — in 2026, from May 23rd to 25th. The opening hours follow classic showman conventions: afternoon opening, continuous operation until late in the evening. Admission to the festival grounds is free; rides and stalls charge individual prices according to the showman.
Kellinghusen is a small town with around 8,000 inhabitants in the Steinburg district of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the river Stör. The town is primarily known for its ceramics and pottery tradition, which is celebrated annually at the pottery market in August. However, the rest of the event year — Pentecost funfair, PEP Blues Festival, Christmas market — also ensures a lively town calendar.
People from the surrounding communities in the Steinburg district have known the Pfingstjahrmarkt since childhood — the event is one of the fixed anchor dates where families and friends come together across generations. For tourists from Hamburg or the Kiel Canal, Kellinghusen is a worthwhile Pentecost detour away from the beaches.
The 2026 edition is confirmed on the official event calendar of the town of Kellinghusen (kellinghusen.de/veranstaltungen). As every year, the date falls on the Pentecost weekend and uses the central market square as the festival grounds.
The organizer is the town of Kellinghusen, which organizes the festival together with the showman's association.
