The Town Festival of Kellinghusen
The Marktplatzfest has been a firm fixture in Kellinghusen's event calendar for years. The venue is the Obere Marktplatz, the urban heart of the town — surrounded by half-timbered and brick buildings, shops, and gastronomic establishments. Once a year, this central square transforms into a festival mile with a stage, market stalls, and culinary offerings.
Music, Food, Regional Products
The program follows the classic North German town festival format. Regional bands, dance groups, and sometimes national acts perform on a stage. Snack stands offer Bratwurst, shrimp rolls, potato pancakes, farmer's bread, and sweets — alongside these, regional vendors present their products from the Steinburg district: honey, cheese, smoked meat, homemade jams. The event is embedded in the economic and cultural life of the town and strengthens the local community.
Kellinghusen and the Steinburg District
Kellinghusen is located in the middle of the Steinburg district, between Itzehoe and Bad Bramstedt. With around 8,000 inhabitants, the town is manageable, but its market square is surprisingly representative. Kellinghusen is known for its faience manufactory — the famous "Kellinghusener Fayence" came from here in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Marktplatzfest builds on this civic tradition: it is the festival of the citizens, organized by the town of Kellinghusen, supported by clubs and local retailers. The state of Schleswig-Holstein values such town festivals as an important contribution to local identity.
