Autumn fair on Königsplatz with market stalls and amusement rides
While the Ascension Day market in May heralds the Allgäu spring season, the Kathreinemarkt in Kempten concludes the warmer months. Named after Saint Catherine (nameday November 25th), it traditionally marks the transition into the pre-Christmas period. The city of Kempten organizes both markets as central folk festivals in the Allgäu calendar.
Königsplatz becomes the fairground right in the heart of the city. Expect dodgems, children's carousels, classic throwing stalls, shooting galleries, games of chance, and a variety of food and drink stalls. The festivities run daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and admission is free.
Parallel to the funfair, a market with over 60 vendors takes place on Hildegardplatz and in the adjacent Stadtpark from October 24th to 26th. Clothing, household goods, sweets, leather goods, regional specialties—the market has the feel of a classic market fair with an Allgäu touch.
With nearly 70,000 inhabitants, Kempten is one of the larger towns in the Allgäu—and at the same time, the gateway to Oberstdorf, Bad Hindelang, and the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park. Visitors to the Kathreinemarkt often combine it with a weekend in the region: hiking in the mild late autumn, a visit to the Kempten Residenz and St. Lorenz Basilica, and a stroll through the market to round off their trip.
The Kathreinemarkt 2026 will take place from Friday, October 23rd, to Saturday, October 31st, 2026, on Königsplatz in Kempten. It is the autumn counterpart to the Kempten Ascension Day market and one of the most traditional folk festivals in the Allgäu.
The parallel market on Hildegardplatz and in the Stadtpark runs from October 24th to 26th, daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Over 60 vendors will offer clothing, household goods, sweets, leather goods, and regional specialties.
Admission to the fairgrounds and market is free. Prices for rides and stalls are displayed on-site.
Kempten is easily accessible by train (ICE/RE) and bus. It's a 10-minute walk from the main train station to Königsplatz. By car, take the A 7 or A 96 (exit Kempten).
Free admission. Food, drinks, and amusement rides are paid for on-site.
The market is less crowded on weekday mornings; it can get busy on weekends. Families tend to visit in the afternoon, and many stalls offer special deals at family prices.
