Kärwa – the Franconian Kirchweih Festival
The Kärwa – also called Kerwa or Kirchweih in the Hof region – has been an integral part of Franconian customs for centuries. Originally, it commemorated the consecration of the village church or the feast day of the church patron saint. These religious occasions evolved into multi-day village festivals with marquees, music, traditional meals, and dancing. In Upper Franconia, many clubs and associations actively preserve this tradition to this day.
Dancing in the ZV Hall
In Feilitzsch, the ZV Feilitzsch e.V., the village's traditional sports club, organizes the Kärwatanz. The venue is the club's own sports hall at Steinweg 8 – usually a training ground for football, gymnastics, Zumba, and aerobics, but on Kirchweih Sunday, it transforms into a dance floor and festival hall. A dance and party band plays from 5:30 PM onwards for the Kirchweih dance. The club's restaurant provides Franconian specialties and well-poured beer.
Customs in the Hof Region
Feilitzsch is located in the Hof district in the north of Bavaria, very close to the Thuringian and Saxon borders. The region preserves the Franconian-Vogtland Kärwa tradition with Polka, Rheinländer, and Waltz dances. Sunday is traditionally the day when young and old gather for dancing – a cross-generational village festival that makes the cohesion within club life tangible.
A Village Festival with Sociability
The Kärwatanz of ZV Feilitzsch is not a large-scale event, but an authentic piece of Franconian folk culture: club members, neighbors, and guests from surrounding communities celebrate together in the hall. Anyone who wants to experience Kirchweih in its original form – without commercial hype, but with lived tradition – will find it here.
